Snooker

The calm, controlled game of Snooker requires a vast amount of patience from both players and spectators.

To accompany that patience ladies, you must know the low down regarding terminology. So here we go… time to get clued up on your “cue’s”!!

Address: When the tip is at the cue ball, the start of the shot.

A Break: Is a sequence of scoring shots.

Backspin: The effect on the shot, when hitting the c ball below the centre.

Baize: The cloth that covers the bed of the snooker table.

Baulk Line: The line on the table where the yellow, brown and brown balls are positioned.

Bed: Refers to the playing surface of the snooker table.

Break Off: Is the first shot of the match, taken from the “D”.

Butt End: Refers to the base of the cue.

Cannon: Is a term used to describe when the cue ball hits more than one object ball.

Chalk: The substance that is used on the tip of the cue, to provide grip.

Clearance: Refers to a sequence of shots, this continues until the player has potted all the balls on the snooker table.

Cluster: Is the term used to describe a pack of red balls closely located to each other.

Cue: Is the wooden apparatus used for striking the ball.

Cue Arm: This is the back arm used to control the cue.

Cue Ball: Is the white ball, and is the only ball the cue is allowed to strike.

Cue Tip: Refers to the leather tip of the cue.

Cushion: Is the area around the edge of the snooker table, covered in baize.

D: Is the name of the semi-circle on the baulk line of the table.

Double: Occurs when the object ball is potted, after making contact with the cushion.

Double-Kiss: Refers to a second contact of the object ball.

Drill: The approach to a shot.

Foul Stroke: A shot that breaks the rules, therefore a penalty is given.

Full Ball Contact: Covering the object ball completely with the cue ball.

Half Ball Contact: Occurs when the cue ball covers half the object ball when hit.

In Off: When a ball follows into the same pocket immediately after another, usually the white cue ball.

Kick: Occurs when the cue or object ball, jumps in the air on the back of the cue’s impact.

Masse: Is a term used when a player hit the ball down one side, to create maximum swing.

Miscue: The incorrect striking of the cue ball

Object Ball: Refers to the target ball.

Pack: Is a term used when describing a closely situated group of red balls.

Plant: Occurs when one object ball hits another, in hope that this second ball is potted.

Pocket: The pocket is where the ball is potted. Situated around the edge of the snooker table.

Pot: Is the term used when the ball is shot successfully into the pocket.

Power Shot: A shot with speed and power.

Quarter Ball Contact: Occurs when the cue ball covers a quarter of the object ball.

Rail: Is the wooden area around the cushion. The outer rim of the snooker table.

Rest: Is a wooden piece of equipment used to enhance the players reach down the table.

Safety Shot: A stroke which attempts to put the balls ( usually the cue ball) in a difficult position for the opponent to then work around.

Set: A shot that results in two object balls touching.

Shot to Nothing: This occurs when the player feels the safety shot is more beneficial than attempting the direct pot of the ball.

Snooker: To be “snookered” occurs when the object ball is being obstructed by another ball on the table.

Top Spin: This occurs when the cue ball is hit towards the top and creates spin on the shot.

Touching Ball: The meaning is in the name, when two balls are touching.

Trick Shots: These are usually exhibition shot, that is pre planned.

Waggles: Is the term used for the movement, backwards and forwards, of the cue before hitting the cue ball.
